Texas A&M’s Reveille sitting by a jul log is exactly what the world needs during the holidays
An excellent example of how a university should be using social media — from a student’s perspective
Many universities around the world have social media accounts, but none of those schools are Texas A&M. A&M, who has social media for their school in its own right, also has an account for its mascot Reveille. During Decemeber of 2019, this account and the main posted an amazing, 1 hour long special, of Ms. Rev sitting in front of a fireplace.
Now, this was talked about within the A&M community. As a student there myself, I remember seeing this post and throwing it on the family TV during a session of decorating the tree. However, I do still think this one post in particular should receive more attention than its gotten.
I think that this post represents a master class in fan service combined with sentimental understanding that many social media accounts lack in today’s world. A lot can be learned from this one post.
Cross Platform
I also want to give Texas A&M props for their cross platform posting of this, and other pieces of social media. As a frequent user of reddit, it was refreshing to see the /u/TAMU account post this on the /r/Aggies subreddit that I subscribe to. It’s nice to see a university taking an interest in the areas on the internet where their students and members of the community congregate.
A&M also maintains a presence on that subreddit regularly with a few other posts, as well as just on reddit in general. I’d love to see more schools take this approach to the site, it’s very underutilized by brands and can be a powerful tool of building grassroots support and communication for any school, brand or organization.
What’s the point?
This article is more to the point, but I think that’s because my main point doesn’t take much to say. Schools, and really anyone, should try not taking social media ultra-seriously. Reveille sitting by a fire is fun, and it makes people happy. It’s not serious, it’s not offensive, it’s just a good post that showcases an often ignorned side of such a large insitution. A&M continues this trend with their account for Reveille herself, which is basically all just fun, happy content of the good girl herself.
I’ll continue to follow Texas A&M’s socials even after I graduate. I hope to continue to see more content from them, and even more innovation to keep them at the top level of university social media.
